The benefits of using animated videos for academic research

Animation can be a valuable tool for academic researchers who want to communicate their findings. Traditional methods like academic papers, presentations, and conferences are important but can fail to engage wider audiences or simplify complex topics.

Animated videos offer a cost-effective visual medium that enhances understanding, engagement, and dissemination of research findings.

Let’s look at why animation is particularly beneficial for academic research.

Simplifying complex concepts

Academic research often involves intricate ideas, data, and theories that may be difficult for non-experts to comprehend. Animation can help break down these complex concepts into visually accessible elements. Using diagrams, motion and symbols, voiceovers, and music, theoretical ideas and data can be transformed into easily understandable visuals.

Better engagement

Research findings, mainly when presented in traditional formats, can be dry and challenging for audiences to engage with. Animations offer a visually stimulating alternative that captures attention.

For example, we created a series of four animations and a supporting leaflet for a research project on ‘Good’ police custody: Influencing police custody and practice, for Professor Layla Skinns from the Centre for Criminological Research at Sheffield University. The digital guide, which is accessible to detainees through a tablet-sized screen integrated into the intercom panel within their cells, provides essential information about detainees’ rights and entitlements and the standard of treatment they should receive from staff.

The use of visuals helps maintain audience interest throughout the explanation of the research findings. By using animation, researchers can convey their findings in a more entertaining and digestible format, ensuring key messages resonate with the audience.

Enhances reach and accessibility

One of the main challenges in academic research is reaching a broad audience. Research papers are often locked behind paywalls, and conferences cater mainly to niche academic communities. Animation, however, can be shared easily across multiple platforms, including social media, websites, and educational platforms. This greatly enhances the accessibility of research, ensuring it reaches a broader audience beyond academia, including policymakers, industry professionals, students, and the public. In addition, animations can be easily translated into different languages, further broadening their reach globally.

Boosts information retention

People remember information better when presented visually and in a story format. Research shows that visuals are processed 60,000 times faster than text, and people retain 80% of what they see and do compared to only 20% of what they read. By combining visuals, audio, and motion, animations can significantly improve the retention of research findings. This is particularly useful when conveying key messages or complex data points. Animated sequences allow viewers to follow a narrative, making the information more memorable and impactful.

Securing funding for research projects

Animations can positively impact funding allocation when securing finance for future projects. The University Research Excellence Framework (REF) assesses the quality of research in higher education, scoring from unclassified to 4*. Higher REF scores improve funding opportunities, with research impact and reach being crucial. Animation can effectively explain and share findings, enhancing your REF score by increasing visibility and accessibility.

Allows wider dissemination

Animations are highly shareable across digital platforms. Social media is a powerful tool for sharing concise, engaging content. A well-crafted animation can go viral, reaching thousands or millions of viewers worldwide. This can significantly amplify the reach and impact of academic research, making it accessible to people who might not engage with traditional formats.

Incorporating animation into academic research findings offers numerous benefits, from simplifying complex concepts and increasing engagement to improving retention and reach.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, animation is a powerful tool for researchers looking to communicate their work more effectively. It not only enhances the understanding of research findings but also broadens their impact, making academic work more accessible to both experts and non-specialists alike.
